Here Lies The Life Of Andrew Goodman

This one’s for you man….this ones for you……

We are sitting in shock.  We can’t believe what we have just read.  We don’t want to think about it.  But we can’t stop thinking about it.  We can’t stop thinking about him.  And how he lived.  And how we created him.  And how we killed him…

*

Late night….the street is empty…..quiet….

A sudden noise….a stone thrown against a window pane…and a shout….

He opens the door…with his sad eyes staring out…his gaunt frame engulfed by the doorway…

In they go…for another round…of relief from pain…

His mother is in the next room…smoking a joint…in a different world.

She doesn’t care…the house is a mess…disgusting…unlivable…

They pass his sister….in front of the TV…just sitting there…

Up in his room…they get down to business…

Oxcys…mushrooms…washed down with alcohol…weed a constant side…

And the violence…anger management with a samurai sword…throwing things around the house…destruction…sweet release of pent-up rage…

He moves around the chaos…comfortable…at ease.

It is all he’s ever known.

The neighbors turn the other way…they are embarrassed…uncomfortable…uneasy…

He moves on from year to year…friend to friend…as they get older and move on…to a stability he does not have the tools to achieve…

Others come…late at night…to his house…to get some relief…

Other boys…just like those…that were here…twelve years ago…fifteen…and dying from the pain…

Only now…they say he is not their friend…they say he is their enemy…their abuser…their molester…

The neighbors take an interest now.

They feel obligated to make calls.  To set up surveillance.  To make investigations.

Now…when it is too late…when it is different…when it is less understood…when it is confusing…they take interest in the boy…who one day became a man…who got locked up…because no one called…to take him away…from the house that destroyed…his future.

Andrew…we’re sorry…we never took a stand…against the injustice…that was your life…and now…you are paying the price…for all the mistakes…this world has made.

  1. It’s a nice thought, but if you know the other side, you can’t see past the fact that Andrew took another life along with him. Do whatever you want to yourself, but you can’t take another life to ease your pain.

    • I definitely see the other side and understand it. I know full well that he did something horrible…but I do think that there were signs pointing here for a long long time and no one cared to step in and take an interest when there was a way to help him when he was younger. This was a eulogy or sorts to a life that could have been – to a dear friend who could have been a better sort of person…
